5 Types of Mold You May Find with Mold Testing in Your Home

No one wants to find mold wreaking havoc in their homes. But when you do, mold testing can help you figure out just what you might be facing. Mold can be different in various areas. Some areas are more likely to see certain types of mold. It’s also important to note that some types of mold might be considered more hazardous than others.

In this guide, we will share with you the 5 most common types of mold found in Arizona homes. Take a look at these for more information.

1. Penicillium

The first type of mold is penicillium. This is more likely to be found inside than anywhere else. Anything like carpet, furniture, and even insulation can grow this type of mold but it typically arises after water damage has occurred.

The problem is that penicillium spreads very fast. Once it takes root, it can move quickly and cause extensive mold damage in the process. This should be treated and removed as quickly as possible.

2. Stachybotrys Chartarum

This is the most-dreaded mold out there. It’s what you might know as “black mold.” The problem is that it is toxic. Not only can it damage your home, but it can be detrimental to your health as well. Black mold has been known to cause breathing problems and even aggravate health issues.

Things like asthma, sinus infections, and even depression can be the result of black mold taking root. It likes to harbor in an area that is dark and damp, and that is where it’s most likely to be found in your home.

3. Alternaria

Alternaria is very common, particularly in a residential area. It can be inside or outside. The only thing it needs is a damp environment. Now, we know that Arizona isn’t exactly known for dampness, but you could easily find this in the bathroom or spreading near a faucet of some sort.

Alternaria likes damp, cool environments and it grows quickly once it starts. While it’s not necessarily toxic like black mold, it has been known to cause allergies and asthma attacks on occasion.

4. Aureobasidium

This type of mold is found most often on wood or on wallpaper and caulking materials. This includes wooden furniture. It’s very noticeable and will show up in either a black or a pink color, which makes it stand out. Take note here that just because it is black does not make it black mold.

That being said, you don’t want to let this mold stick around. It can cause illness and might trigger severe allergies for some people.

5. Cladosporium

Finally, we bring you one last common mold. This one is tricky. It lives in both warm and cold environments. Most of the time, you find this in green and brown tones. You will find it on cabinets, floorboards, carpet, and even aged fabrics. You should take care with this type of mold, as it can cause breathing problems as well.
